    The Self-sufficient Staple

    March 15, 2017

The appeal of a humble utility jacket, to me, is exactly its simplicity – its independence of seasons or thematic trends, to be precise. The weathered fabrics, the elegantly streamlined details, the superior functionality, and the comfortable fit are born out of plain necessity.

It’s a uniform but also decidedly untailored. There is an intricate vagueness to it.

Sans the signature modern elements such as asymmetry, outsized shapes, and deconstructed silhouette, it’s not exactly aesthetically progressive. But it’s contemporary in another sense. It’s completely unbound and self-sufficient – some key traits of a wardrobe staple.

This rendition by Theory carries on the spirit. I like how it is updated in a subtle manner. The use of the durable Japanese cotton twill, the matching twill belts, the rustic, minimal metal buttons and buckles, and the gently lived-in wash all together form rich and delicate nuances.

Worn with or without impactful high fashion pieces, the jacket plays a robust role both visually and practically. At the height of street- and high-fashion fusions, I have to say, this rendition seized the moment.
