Boy herringbone blazers, pressed suit pants, structured shoulders, many of which manifested in an asexual silhouette, are a few iconic fond moments from my infantile memories.
I was born in the 80s. Besides the rock and roll and loud and flashy flair, my impression of the period’s aesthetics – which roughly formed from a limited exposure to mostly my mother’s wardrobe – is certainly characteristic of the times but also trending more elegant than anything else.
I can see my mother in this entire outfit, with a few adjustments to suit her meticulous taste:

– I went one size larger on everything. Although oversized shoulder is a classy and likely romantic idea to her, she would want all her pieces sized properly because “clothes need to fit well at certain parts”.
– She would have her pant hems precisely trimmed to hit mid-heel. My slouchy floor-sweeper hems don’t stand a chance in her book. “They look lazy”.
– She wouldn’t have approved wearing her Chanel as a cross-body, although in recent years, she’s opened up to backpacks, exclusively for traveling purposes.
Oh, and bed head and fake tan are no no on her.
She’s a fine lady. I’m the fine lady’s wild child. This outfit is 80s chic 2.0. And I owe her this.
