Drawing inspiration from the traditional Japanese sock, Tabi split-toe footwear debuted back in the 80s. That the design still draws polarized reactions 30 years on (gasps!) is in itself a success. A spin off the iconic Tabi, these Maison Margiela split-fingers are just as curious as their counterparts to say the least. The gloves come in extra long sleeves that double as a statement accessory. And the vivid-toned checked pattern is pleasantly stimulating. Accommodating to most of my winter pieces, these gloves sadly have a major drawback. They are, and I’m being subtle, clumsy for tech duties that pretty much everybody subscribes to nowadays – I mean, adding a detachable connection or even partial opening between the sleeve and mitten would have quickly fixed the problem. Besides everything else, I’m keen to see if this style is renewed at their Paris FW19 show in a few days.
