

There is this largely rundown area in Queens that has a strange charm. It’s dead especially on a weekend. Ramshackle vehicles on dirty streets and aged factory buildings that have fallen into disrepair are possible signs of a hedonistic past. The sharp contrast from the thriving neighborhoods just blocks away is riveting. As Rei Kawakubo, the Japanese designer, likes to put it, there is an art to in-betweenness. Like how nonconformist aesthetics could end up expanding the conventional limits of beauty, to look beneath the surface – into the possible past in this case – can unveil some divergent character that changes our perspective.
