Everyday din hits its peak during wee hours on the city’s subway. The trains make a peculiar environment. Ear bugs, muted texts, books or devices that keep one occupied are also tools to minimize unnecessary eye contacts. It’s a private experience except for the little personal space that compromises it and alters the nature.
I vividly remember how I routinely did my makeup on my Bart rides every morning when I was in graduate school back in the Bay – a likely inapt act to which I had little alternative at the time.
I’m a frequent rider for practical reasons. And during my numerous rides, I more than once thought of the striking resemblance of the commute environment and the business I’m in.
Leading fashion houses who still have the luxury to be somewhat original both lead and follow, invent as they replicate. It’s almost like the chicken or the egg causality dilemma that’s impossible to tell who made it first. The clashes between artistic expression and commercial needs made the business a colossal paradox. It’s ever more difficult to enter and equally hard to sustain.
That is precisely the behind the scene everyday din of the business.
(With all that said, here’s to reinvented classics – one of the proven safe bets to stay ahead of the curve.)
