I don’t intend to make an association with Stanley Kubrick’s 1999 movie here. But if that’s what you think of at the title, I take it willingly.
Alright, enough pun for the day and now back to business. So I was asked in an interview who my favorite designers are these days, I couldn’t help but list almost all Belgian designers. The rest are 2 Japanese names, Yohji Yamamoto, and Rei Kawakubo.
Their vigor, the avant-garde spirit, and perhaps most remarkably, the precision are impressive. Their designs are intellectual and emotional. I find the latter qualities extremely rare in fashion.
Ann Demeulemeester, with her peers like Raf Simons and Dries Von Noton, is responsible for such developments in the fashion scene.
Clichés are truths – the devil is in the details. This top I’m wearing by Demeulemeester opens up in the back in asymmetrical lines; the quasi-muslin hand of the fabric is airy and unpretentious – its slightly rough texture feels worn yet fresh. It strikes an intricate balance between familiarity and newness. What a wonderful feeling.
But above all, what excites me the most is perhaps hope to certain degree. Among many bad interpretations of avant-garde, the spirit is still alive and well and done right to pleasantly surprise at time, thanks to people like Ann.

The Belgians are so good, that Antwerp school is some serious business! Beautiful top and I love your description about it.
